This Friday, Experience the story of Assam’s Legendary Goalpariya Folk Singer

Guwahati, November 22: It is a great news for Assamese film lovers as Sonar Baran Pakhi, which has brought accolades to the state, is all set to release on November 24. The film won the Grand JuryPrize (Best Feature) at the IFFLA (Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles) 2017 and the Best Audience Award at the 15th Dhaka International Film Festival, 2017.

Directed by Bobby Sarma Baruah, Sonar Baran Pakhi is a biopic based on the life of legendary Goalparia Folk Singer Padmashree Pratima Baruah Pandey, popularly nicknamed Hastir Kanya.

Pratima Baruah was born in the royal family of Gauripur in present day Dhubri district of Assam. As a child, she accompanied her father many an elephant hunting expedition; she maintained close relations with the mahouts to learn their unique ways of singing. However, other members of the royal family disapproved disapproved of the young girl humming rustic ballads; many even warned her that nobody would marry her if she continued to practise these folk songs. But she was already wed to Music. She sang a Goalpariya Lokageet in Dr Bhupen Hazarika’s debut feature film Era Bator Xur, which marked the beginning of her musical journey. The rest is history as we know it. It was her pioneering efforts that popularised Goalpariya Folk Songs and brought it to wide acceptance and national recognition. She had always sung for the pure love of Folk Music.

Sonar Baran Pakhi present an in depth journey of the life of this legendary singer. The film has already been successful in earning accolades for the state.
