Tezpur, May 14: A two-day Workshop on Gender and Sexuality was organized at the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism, Tezpur University on May 09 and 10, 2018.
Students across different disciplines participated to discuss and deliberate upon gender issues, sexuality, social sensitivity, sexual harassment and LGBTQIA.
The first day began with an inaugural ceremony where Dr Monisha Behal, CEO, North East Network, introduced the theme and established the importance of the workshop. Ritupon Gogoi, Executive Director, Foundation for Social Transformation, Prof. PK Das, Dean, School of Humanities and Social Sciences and Dr Abhijit Bora, Head of the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism also addressed the audience.
It was followed by activity based interactive sessions conducted by Rituparna Borah and Ritambhara Mehta, Co-Directors, Nazariya Group, New Delhi. They acquainted the participants with different gender types, meaning of sexuality and the necessity of a well-balanced equalitarian social structure.
The second day saw an extremely fruitful discussion on ‘Sexual Harassment’ through which Dr Madhurima Goswami, Head, Centre for Women Studies, Tezpur University, highlighted the need to voice against any form of maltreatment or persecution.
There were also presentations by Paridhi Saikia, Deepjyoti Bhatta and Indrani Kalita, who are students representing various institutions of Tezpur City and are actively working for avocation of gender justice and equality.
