On Thursday, a bill was introduced by Chandra Mohan Patowary on behalf of Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to upgrade Cotton College into a full-fledged university.
The existing property and land of Cotton College and Cotton College State University shall then vest with Cotton University.
The proposed University shall have facilities of Arts, Science, Law, Medicine, Technology, Agriculture, Engineering, Management, Commerce, Mass Communication, Indian fine Arts and Environmental Science.
All aspects of teaching and research will be discussed in and decided by the university, which will also be responsible for holding examinations and conferring degrees and other academic distinctions.
This bill however has been opposed by the Cotton College Union Society (CCUS) grounds that it will destroy the glory of the 116 year old institution, and also create problems for the Higher Secondary students studying in Cotton College.
