Thousands join AASU’s mass protest against Citizenship Amendment Bill at Chandmari

Guwahati, May 29:  Thousands of people participated in the mass protest called by All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) today against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016 at Chandmari, Guwahati.

The protest, which was organised at the Assam Engineering Institute ground in Chandmari, was supported by as many as 28 organisations including the AGP, which is an ally of BJP in the coalition government of Assam.

Speaking to media persons during the protest, AASU leader Samujjal Bhattacharya said that Assam is not a dumping ground for Bangladeshis and warned the government of severe protests in the future.

It may be mentioned here that people from all across the state have been protesting against the bill as it advocates the provision of granting citizenship to Bangladesh national who migrated to Assam even after 1971.

All Bodo Students’ Union (ABSU) leader Pramod Boro said that the bill poses threat to the people of Assam and shall never be accepted.

The protest started at 6:00 am and continued till 5:00 pm.

The mass protest also saw the participation of Dr Hiren Gohain, Editor-in-Chief of Pratidin Time Nitumoni Saikia, former CM of Assam Prafulla Kumar Mahanta, singer Zubeen Garg, sculptor Biren Singha among other noted personalities of Assam.
