Tezpur University students hold candlelight march demanding justice for 12 year old rape victim

The students of Tezpur University, under the aegis of the Tezpur University Students’ Council (TUSC) organised a silent candlelight march in the university premises, seeking justice for the 12 year old girl who was raped by a monk at a monastery in Borgolai, Margherita of Tinsukia district in Assam. The march started off at around 7:30 pm from “Essentials”, a popular hangout spot in the university campus and was attended by almost 3000 students who carried placards and candles.

They marched up to the university gates where they made a road graffiti using candles and also staged a street performance demanding justice for the victim, along with strict action against the accused.

The march concluded at “Essentials”, where the participants took a pledge to condemn all sorts of crime and violence against women. A member of the TUSC also told UniTreed that they will initiate a petition campaign among the TU community and send the same to the Chief Minister of the state and the PM of India for immediate action.

It must be noted that a girl, who is studying in the sixth standard, was raped by a monk named Indensa on August 3. The victim and her elder brother,  residents of Lakhla village in Jagun had visited the temple to offer prayers. The alleged monk had sent the girl’s brother to a nearby market and raped her.

The massive rally was organised by TUSC. The students holding placards and candles demanded speedy investigation and strict action against the accused. They will also send a petition signed by the university fraternity on a Gamocha to the Prime Minister of India and Chief Minister of the state,  said a functionary of the students’ council.
