Ukhrul, April 24: The second edition of the Shirui Lily Festival kick started today and is being organised at three major venues in Ukhrul district of Manipur.
Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh opened the inaugural function of the second state level Shirui Lily Festival at Shirui Village Ground, Ukhrul and said that the festival binds the people together culturally, traditionally and emotionally.
The five-day festival comprises of numerous experiences and activities, sponsored by the tourism department of the state.
Activities at the festival include camping, cross country enduro race and cycle rally, exploring hidden tourist hotspots of Ukhrul among others.
About the flower:
It may be mentioned here that the Shirui Lily is the state flower of Manipur and legend has it that the Lily is the daughter of Goddess Philava who resides in and protects the hills of Shirui. Commonly called as Kashong Timrawon, the flower is also believed to be a kind and protective spirit that rests on the peak of the hill and symbolises prosperity and happy life.
The festival was initiated last year on the lines of Sangai Festival and is an yearly affair since then.
