Guwahati, February 21: Assam Transport Minister Chandramohan Patowary, while answering a question at the Assembly, today informed that at present, only 647 buses of the Assam State Transport Corporation are operational across the state. As many as 453 buses of the corporation are not in running conditions.
The Transport Minister also informed that 200 ASTC buses are undergoing repair works in ASTC workshops in the state. It must be noted that Patowary had earlier given hints of privatisation of ASTC earlier, as the corporation is running in loss.
The Minister also said that 174 Mercedes buses shall be brought to Assam under the ASTC; five Volvo buses have already been brought. MoUs has also been signed with Volvo, Mercedes and Scania companies for operation of luxury buses in the state.
It must be noted that presently Volvo luxury buses are plying in Assam, however, in PPP mode and ASTC has to pay a particular amount of money to the private operator in a per kilometre basis, whether or not that money is recovered from the passengers’ fare. Also, the volvos do not bear AS 20 registration, which is specifically booked for ASTC buses.
