Guwahati, September 11: The two day festival ‘North East Calling’, organised by the Ministry of DoNER, ended yesterday. The festival was organised under the guidance of the Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) of the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) Dr Jitendra Singh. Singh inaugurated the festival on September 09, 2017 at India Gate lawns, New Delhi.
The event was organized by the DoNER ministry under its ‘Destination North East Series’ of this year (2017-18). The primary objective was to promote the art, culture, heritage, cuisine, handicrafts, business and tourism of North East India, and showcase the various activities and products of the region. The vibrant culture, colorful tradition wear, intricate handicrafts and the delicious food that the event offered, attracted the eyes of Delhiites to the fullest.
Ranging from smoked pork of Assam, Meghalaya, Sikkim to chicken curry served with rice, in the northeastern style along with sweet brown rice cakes of Meghalaya made mouths watery of many. A variety of contests were also held in the run-up of the event viz. photography and caption contest, video contest, choreography contest for colleges on the theme “Connect NE”; quiz competition for schools and colleges; best North-Eastern attire in the crowd and home chef contest among others. The event featured Music Festival for bands of North-East, Cultural Night for Dances of North-East, Exhibitions of activities being undertaken in NE, stalls by various Central Government ministries showcasing the works being undertaken by them in the region, stalls by State Governments offering opportunities in their states, stalls for sale of products of NERAMAC and NEHHDC, B2B Summits on Food Processing, Tourism and Start-up opportunities in the North-East India.
IAS officers who participated in the faashion show at North East Calling
A fashion show was also organised, where a group of IAS Officers of 2015 batch participated, exhibiting the handlooms of Northeast India. The show was one of the main attractions in the last night of the event. The event witnessed huge response from the public. People from all sections enthusiastically participated in the event. Cabinet Secretary PK Sinha was the Chief Guest at the closing ceremony. NK Sinha, Secretary, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Naveen Verma, Secretary, Ministry of DoNER and Rashmi Verma, Secretary, Ministry of Tourism were present during the closing ceremony among other senior officers.
