An exhibition titled “Mysterious Mothers of the Museum” shall be organised at the Assam State Museum, Guwahati from August 1 to August 10, 2017. The exhibition shall bring out four objects from the Sculpture Collection of the Assam State Museum and attempt to re-contextualise them, through providing an alternative identification.
The exhibition attempts to reconsider these objects and identify them as part of a single series (which is presently incomplete). It is proposed that they formed integral parts of an early matrika series.
An associated agenda of the exhibition is also to showcase the importance of pre-Ahom era in Assamese history, and how the same played a crucial role in shaping the socio-cultural identity of the state.
Along with the opening of the exhibition in August 1, an open lecture on the pre-Ahom history by an expert in the field shall also be organised in the museum premises on the 10th of August. Another outreach activity targeting the younger school going audience shall also be conducted on the 5th of August.
The exhibition is organised in collaboration with India Foundation for the Arts, Bangalore and is being curated by Shubhashree Purkayastha. The exhibition has been made possible under the archival and museum fellowships grant of the India Foundation For The Arts, Bangalore, with support from Tata Trusts.
