Mirabai Chanu from Manipur sets Commonwealth Games record

Guwahati, April 05: Mirabai Chanu, who hails from East Imphal, Manipur, made the region proud by setting a record at the ongoing Gold Coast Commonwealth Games. She has bagged gold in women’s 48 kg weightlifting, making it the first gold for India in the event.

Chanu has broken her previous record of lifting 85 kg snatch by lifting 86 kg snatch along with breaking the Commonwealth record.

It may be mentioned that Saikhom Mirabai Chanu had won gold in the women’s 48 kg category by lifting a world record 194 kg in total (85 kg snatch and 105 kg clean and jerk) in the 2017 World Weightlifting Championships held in the United States.

She has also been awarded with the Padma Shri in 2018.
