Manipur’s Sanjita Chanu bags India’s 2nd Gold at the 2018 Commonwealth Games

Guwahati, April 06: In another proud moment for Manipur as well as the country, Manipur’s Sanjita Chanu has clinched India’s second Gold at the ongoing Gold Coast Commonwealth Games 2018.

Chanu lifted a total weight of 192 kg (snatch plus clean and jerk). It may be mentioned that she also set a Games record in snatch with a lift of 84 kg.

Chanu came victorious in the women’s 53 kg weightlifting event on Friday

PM Narendra Modi, in a tweet, congratulated Chanu on her victory.

With Chanu’s gold, this is India’s third medal in the ongoing Commonwealth Games. Earlier, Mirabai Chanu and P Gururaja had won a gold and silver respectively on the first day of the CWG 2018.

It may be mentioned that Sanjita Chanu had earlier won a gold at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games (2014) in women’s 48 kg category.

She had started her weightlifting career in 2006 in Manipur.
