Guwahati, March 22: On the occasion of International Day of Forests on March 21, Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal felicitated eminent environmentalists Jadav Payeng, Ananda Khataniar and Chandrakanta Basumatari.
The three environmentalists were also appointed as the brand ambassadors of the Department of Environment & Forests, Government of Assam, for the year 2018-19.
During the ceremony, the CM stressed on conservation of forests and promoting rural tourism. He spoke about putting sustained efforts in making Northeast an organic hub. He urged all to work together to further increase the forest cover in Assam for a better future.
State Forest Minister Pramila Rani Brahma, Deputy Commissioner Virendra Mittal, forest officers of different districts and students of Narengi High School and ASEB High School also attended the event.
On the occasion, the CM also planted a sapling at the Assam Administrative Staff College premises in Guwahati, along with distributing saplings among school students.
