Cultural personality Kula Barua to grace next GPC program

Guwahati, October 31: One of the acclaimed cultural personalities of Assam, Kula Barua shall grace the ‘Guest of the Month’ program of Guwahati Press Club (GPC) on Thursday, November 02, 2017. Commended Assamese singer and music director Barua will interact with the member-journalists in the program that shall start from 11:30 am at the press club premises.

Born in Silpukhuri, Guwahati on 21st January, 1938, Barua completed his initial schooling at Tezpur and later shifted to Cotton Collegiate School in the city. He studied at B Borooah College, Guwahati.

The soft spoken gentleman took retirement from his government job in 1996. It must be noted that he was a popular footballer at his young age and also used to play Hawaiian guitar, Congo and Bongo. Barua’s singing career started with “Chemoniar Chora” of All India Radio and later he was recognized as a radio artist in 1968. He has sung in several Assamese movies like ‘Paap aru Praychitta’, ‘Srimati Mohimamoyi’, ‘Sadori’, ‘Bristi’, ‘Sendur’, ‘Bishes Erati’, ‘Prabhati Pakhir Gaan’ and ‘Banahansa’ among others. Barua contributed for ‘Srimoti Mohimamoyi’ and ‘Sadori’ as a music director too. Barua also directed music for two television (Doordarshan) serials namely ‘Lahar’ and ‘Namghariya’.
