Guwahati, December 01: The Central Government has planned to roll back the controversial notification, dated May 25, 2017, that prohibited the sale of buffaloes and cows for slaughter at markets across the country.
The decision was taken by the Centre after the Ministry of Environment sought feedback from the states on its notification issued about the changes made to Prevention of Cruelty on Animals Act on May.
It must be noted that the the ban on cattle sale in markets had created controversies across the country. There were also incidents of harassment and assault by cow-protection groups across India, including Assam as well. The Southern states of Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka had strongly opposed the ban, along with numerous protests across the country.
