Cotton University students stage protest against CM Sonowal

Guwahati, May 10: The evening of May 10 witnessed a massive protest being staged by the students of Cotton University against Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal. “We did not want to stage the protest but we had no choice. We were expecting the CM to come, and we could have raised our concerns; but he did not come” said one of the students in the protest.

It may be mentioned here that a felicitation ceremony was organised today at the university premises for the candidates from Assam who qualified the recent UPSC examinations, where CM Sonowal was supposed to be present. Before the event, numerous posters were seen at the university that had Sonowal’s photograph and read “Jatiya Nayak Missing” among other such posters.

However, the students union body of the university has informed that there is no involvement of the university’s students in this regard.

Siddhartha Bhattacharya attended the felicitation ceremony; however, CM Sonowal was nowhere to be seen. This led to an outburst at the university premises and nearby road, with students alleging that the CM cancelled the visit after he came to know that the students might stage a protest.

The Memorandum supposed to be submitted to the CM by the students of Cotton University

Students of the university raised their voice against the Citizenship Amendment Bill, 2016 and said that they wanted to raise their concerns in front of the Chief Minister. His absence, however, was a great dismay for the students.
