“Sections 61A and 61B have been inserted to make alcohol consumption in public punishable with a fine of up to Rs 50,000 and imprisonment of up to six months” said Excise Minister Parimal Shuklabaidya.
It must be noted that presently, drinking alcohol in public places is a bailable offence and offenders can be released on a personal bond, without payment of fine. Also, several offences which were earlier bailable have been made non-bailable in the amendment.
