Guwahati, April 01: In a relief for the employees of the Nagaon Paper Mill, Jagiroad and Cachar Paper Mill, Panchgram, the centre has released the necessary funds to Hindustan Paper Mills Corporation for paying three months’ salary to the employees.
The Union Ministry for Heavy Industries and Public Sector Enterprises released the fund on March 31.
Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, in a tweet, thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Public Sector Enterprises Anant G Geete for releasing the three months’ salary of the employees of the two paper mills.
It may be mentioned that the employees of the two paper mills had not received their salaries for more than a year and had been staging numerous protests against the government, demanding their dues to be released.
Several unions and organisations had also extended their support to the employees and organising protests across the state. Subsequently, CM Sonowal had pursued the matter with the centre, leading to the release of three months’ salary yesterday.
According to sources, the process for reviving both the paper mills have also started.
However, releasing three months’ due is not the solution and does anyhow solve our problems, said an employee of Jagiroad Paper Mill.
“The big question is why only three months out of 18 months salary dues? We are not begging for any help or donation. We are demanding our rights, which are legitimate. We shall fight it out. Our struggle will continue till all rights are protected and the paper mills of Assam are revived” said another employee.
