Assam Forest Guards get modern weapons to combat Rhino Poaching

Kaziranga, February 18: To protect rhinos and other wild animals from poachers, Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal today distributed Bore Pump Action Guns, INSAS rifles, Ghatak Assault rifles and 7.62 SLRs among the forest guards of Kaziranga National Park. State Forest Minister Pramila Rani Brahma was also present during the event.

The CM also informed that 10 Wildlife Fast-track Courts shall be set up to deal with poaching and other wildlife related crimes, which will be for the first time in the country. “Modernisation of arms and equipment has been done for the protection of the rich wildlife of our state. We have put it in high priority” Sonowal said.

It must be noted that Assam is home to more than 90 per cent of India’s rhino population, and there had been several incidents of rhino poaching in the state in the past.
