Guwahati, December 19: TISS (Tata Institute of Social Sciences), Guwahati, is organising this year’s Walkathon on January 21, 2018 to observe National Girl Child Day. It must be noted that Walkathon is an initiative of TISS Guwahati which is held every year to raise important social issues to generate awareness and create a movement.
National Girl Child Day is actually observed on January 24 across the country but the walkathon has been preponed to a Sunday (January 21). The walk is being organised in collaboration with Gauhati University and Assam Engineering College.
The walk shall start from Sundarbari Sports Field, Gauhati Unversity via Assam Engineering College and end at TISS. Walkathon 2018 is open to all citizens of Guwahati regardless of their age. There is no registration fees and participants shall get free merchandise from the event partners, for participating and participants completing the walk will receive certificates from the organisers.

OBR Flash Mob: One Billion Rising Flash Mob is a global movement, founded by Eve Ensler, to end rape and sexual violence against women. It was started in 2012 as part of the V-Day movement. The “billion” refers to the UN statistic that one in three women will be raped or beaten in her lifetime or about one billion. The campaign expands each year. OBR 2018 continues to sustain the theme of “Solidarity Against the Exploitation of Women”. The Flash Mob is one of the many chain of events that is being organized in preparation for the Main OBR Event which is a part of #VAOMALAN2018 this year.
Fitness Boot Camp: It is a type of group physical training program conducted by gyms, personal trainers and former military personnel. The programs are designed to build strength and fitness. There shall also be Fitness Boot Challenges.
The primary objective of the Walkathon is to address the Girl Child’s Right to Healthcare, Equality, Education, Nutrition among other related needs. The event aims to generate awareness and propagate Gender Equality among the people in India. The organising team also plans to have a GAC (Gender Amity Committee) in all the Colleges of Guwahati, which will works towards ensuring sensitisation and awareness amongst all members of the community regarding gender inequality and sexual harassment.
