Full length feature film being made about Majuli and its people

Majuli is not only the world’s largest river island but also the pride of Northeast India. For the first time, a full length Assamese feature film is being made about Majuli and its people by a Majuli-based filmmaker. Anupam Kaushik Borah, a promising alumnus of the prestigious National School of Drama (NSD), is directing this new film titled ‘Bornodi Bhotiai’. The film is being produced under the banner of Bhawariya – The TPositives, a Majuli-based popular drama organisation.

‘Bornodi Bhotiai’ will explore the realities of life in the island district where culture is deeply embedded with performing arts, through centuries of tradition in music, dance and simple spiritual lives. As informed by the director, the film, infused with seriousness and humour, will project Majuli in a different light.

A working still from the film

The film has already completed its first schedule of shooting around some of the most beautiful locations in the island, including Pohumara, Nagaon, Borbaam, Opholamukh and Sonowal Kachari. Its heartening to know that the place is now working towards establishing its own film production to represent its own identity. A majority of the shooting will be done in Majuli, besides Jorhat and Sivasagar. The film’s story-screenplay has been penned by the director himself.

The cast of artistes, mostly newcomers and locally drawn talents, include Dorothi Bhardwaj, Himangshu Gogoi, Rajiv Nath, Monisha Bhuyan, Diganta Konwar, NSD alumnus Sonmoni Sarma, Anupam Kaushik Borah, Kaushik Nath, Palash Mech, Bhaskar Baruah, Gunamani Baruah, Biren Nath, Dipti Devi, Bogaram Nath, Nirumaai Devi and Indiraam Nath among others.

The film also features guest appearances by Himangshu Prasad Das, Pranami Bora, Pabitra Rabha among others. The movie’s music and background score has been done by none other than the very talented Tarali Sarma, while the cinematography has been done by Prayash Sarma Tamuli, and the sound is designed by Debajit Gayan.

Cash strapped at the moment, the production house Bhawariya – The TPositives is hoping to complete the film through crowdfunding. If everything goes according to plan, the film shall hit the theatres this year.
